Renewable Energy Credits

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) facilitates a program known as SuSI. In effect it is a Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) program. For every 1,000-kilowatt hour (kWh) or 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of solar powered energy that is generated, an SREC is earned. These can be sold to energy providers so that you can make money off of your excess energy.

There are two categories of SERCs in New Jersey:

  • ADIs  — These are directed mainly to residences, but community systems and other New Jersey solar programs can be eligible as well.
  • CSIs  — These are commercially focused credits, and the ones your business is more likely to utilize.

State Tax Exemptions

  • Property Tax Exemptions — In New Jersey, solar panels can increase the value of a property to potential buyers/tenants. This boost, however, will not translate to an increase in your property taxes.
  • New Jersey Solar Panels Tax Exemption — When starting your conversion to a New Jersey solar program, the savings start almost immediately because the purchase of the solar panels and support system can be made without sales tax.

Don’t Forget Federal Commercial Solar Incentives

ITCs

The Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC) is a great way for businesses to begin the installation process of New Jersey solar panels. That’s because the ITC provides a 30% tax credit for the installation of a solar panel system.

Recent changes to this program that will remain in place through the end of 2025 include:

REAP Grants

Farmers, agriculturally-related businesses, and small businesses located in rural communities can apply for REAP Grants to make the switch to solar energy in New Jersey.  These grants can be used to cover up to 50% of a project’s cost.

REAP Grants are awarded through a competitive process involving accumulation of points, which are awarded across various categories.
